"The purpose of education is to put meaning into the whole of life not merely preparation for an unknown kind of future living...." E. C. Lindeman,  the American pioneer of life long learning

Now the largest adult education centre in Europe, City Lit opened its doors in 1919. Its aim was to serve adults eager to learn but who didn't necessarily want to study something connected to the world of work. It grew in popularity in the inter war years and many famous writers and academics delivered courses and master classes including Dame Edith Sitwell, T.S. Eliot, G.K. Chesterton, C. Day Lewis, Dorothy Sayers and Dylan Thomas.

Although situated in the heart of London's business district, classes continued throughout WWII, sometimes on the platform of Holborn tube station – where a piano was available for recitals.

Today City Lit runs 3,000 day, evening and weekend courses and more than 24,000 adult learners enrol every year
